'HSK 3 takes you from survival Chinese to functional conversation. Learn who it’s for, what you’ll achieve, and how the course builds vocabulary, grammar, speaking, reading, and writing for real-world tasks.'
HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the official Chinese Proficiency Test developed by Hanban, designed for non-native speakers of Chinese.
At Ramona Mandarin Studio (RMS), we use the HSK framework as a core component of our syllabus, enabling students to progress step by step, track their improvement, and build solid Chinese skills.
We'll be introducing all nine HSK levels in this series — from HSK 1 to HSK 9.
Today, we will introduce HSK 3 — exploring who it's for, what you'll learn, how long it takes, and more.
1. What knowledge will you Gain in HSK 3?

HSK Level 3 tests learners' ability to use Chinese in practical communication. It corresponds to CEFR B1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). By the end of HSK 3, learners will be able to use Chinese to complete basic communication tasks in daily life, study, and work.
2. Who is HSK 3 for?
You might be a good fit for HSK 3 if you:
- Have completed HSK 2 or an equivalent beginner course
- Can handle basic daily communication in Chinese and want to express yourself more naturally and fluently
- Ready to move beyond survival Chinese into functional conversation, so as to understand short passages and written dialogues
3. Course Content
Vocabulary Building
- In HSK 3, your vocabulary grows from 300 to over 600 words
- 12–20 new words per lesson, introduced through practical scenes and dialogue
- Vocabulary in HSK 3 is taught through full dialogues and meaningful word-building. You'll learn to form new words from known characters, understand common idioms, and recognize patterns that help you guess meaning — laying the groundwork for more independent reading and expression.
Grammar & Sentence Patterns
- HSK 3 helps you move beyond basic sentence building to express more complex ideas.
- Each lesson introduces 2–3 grammar points, taught through short, intuitive notes and practiced in real-life dialogue. You'll gradually move from simple structures to multi-part sentences, sequences of actions, and expressing opinions or conditions, all while expanding your sentence confidence.
By the end of HSK 3, you'll be able to:
- ✅ Describe actions and their outcomes
- ✅ Ask questions more flexibly
- ✅ Express time and sequence
- ✅ Compare things and describe intensity
- ✅ Talk about reasons, conditions, and assumptions
- ✅ Give commands and requests
- ✅ Express opinions and feelings
- ✅ Understand how Chinese sentences are built
Speaking & Listening
This level covers nine real-world themes, expanding beyond daily life, school, work, and health to include richer topics such as art, nature, and technology.
You'll also practice ten essential language tasks, including: describing people's appearance and personality, talking about interests and hobbies, choosing gifts and expressing preferences and more everyday communicative situations.
You won't just respond to questions — you'll learn how to start conversations, share your ideas, and express yourself with greater fluency and flexibility.
By the end of HSK 3, you'll be able to:
- Engage in basic but functional conversations in life, study, and work
- Handle everyday tasks like describing situations, giving directions, asking for help, or explaining your preferences
- Communicate your ideas more clearly — and understand more of what others say, even at a faster pace
Reading & Writing
In HSK 3, reading and writing begin to play a more visible role — not just recognizing words, but understanding how characters are formed and how ideas connect across sentences.
You'll continue working with the 300+ vocabulary words required at this level, now supported by word formation practice using familiar components ("old characters, new words"), radical-based learning and cultural idioms and sayings.
Writing is still focused and approachable:
- You'll be expected to write short phrases and full sentences, using common grammar and vocabulary learned in context
- Character writing centers on meaningful units
Through tasks like dialogue completion, sentence reordering, and short response writing, you'll learn to express clear ideas in written Chinese.
Reading texts also take a step forward:
The fourth scene in each lesson shifts from dialogue to short paragraph reading, preparing you for longer texts in HSK 4.
Whether you're reading signs, writing a short note, or trying to understand a native speaker's WeChat message, HSK 3 gives you the tools to do it — with confidence and growing independence.
4. Duration & Class Format
- Total Hours: 60–80 lessons (45 mins / lesson)
- Formats: Group / Private / Online / In-person.
